Surfing - Getting Started
Surfing is fast becoming one of the UK`s most popular sports, although a terribly frustrating one, especially when any wrong move means a dunking in cold water. But if you are one of the thousands of people willing to get wet then you are in luck. The UK boasts some fantastic coastline and you can find great places to surf pretty much anywhere. Some of the best locations for beginners however, can be found in Wales and the South West. Head to the popular Gower in Wales for mile after mile of beach, or visit Hell`s Mouth in Gwynedd, a four mile long bay with good swells. Cornwall is known for its beaches and laid back vibe and beginners should try either Perranporth Beach or Watergate Bay for their large beaches and consistent waves.
Before you get started take some time to consider the equipment you will need. Obviously you will need a surfboard, but there are lots of boards available all with different shapes, lengths and widths. If you are starting out then keep things simple and look for a board that is stable, easy to paddle and will catch the waves without too much trouble. Generally the bigger the board the more stable it will be, so aim for a Long board or Mini Mal style. Many surf schools start their students on a soft-top board, which helps to avoid injury when falling off or getting bumped by the board. Another must have piece of kit for surfers of all abilities is a leash. Simply put, having a leash will mean you don`t spend all your time chasing your board up and down the shoreline.
Surfing in the UK means you will definitely need a wetsuit, even in the summer months. There are plenty of suits to choose from, with different ranges of thickness and style and many now incorporating some very innovative technology. Whatever style you go for, your wetsuit should be well fitting, allow you good freedom of movement and keep you reasonably warm for hours at a time.
Finally invest in some board wax to help you get some traction on your board. A well-applied layer of wax will stop you slipping off and will help you turn the board as you ride the wave. Again, there are a wide variety of makes and brands, but it is the wax`s softness that you need to take note of. For example, if you are surfing in cold water then go for the softest solution.
Getting the right kit is important, but there are plenty of options out there so spend some time choosing the best equipment for you. Take a look at brands such as Billabong who will keep you looking good on and off the beach. And once you have the kit then it`s time to hit the waves. |
